Massage Techniques applied to oiled skin
Effleurage, long even strokes with a firm pressure typically in the direction of blood circulation.
Friction or Pétrissage, a combination of firm movements, including, kneading, wringing, rolling, and friction. Aimed at specific tissues to reduce knots / adhesions and increase circulation.
Tapotement - Rhythmic, percussive techniques to stimulate blood flow and break down adhesions
These techniques can also be used with finger kneading, as well as knuckles and elbows.
Massage for Relaxation - a combination of the above techniques are used with varying speed and depth to induce increased circulation, reduced muscle tone and a sense of relaxation and well being.
Deep Tissue Massage with the elbow involves stretching of the deep muscles. The pisiform (a small bone in the heel of the palm) is also often used. Typically used on deep and large muscles.
Forearm massage, used for deep gliding strokes and applying pressure over boney prominences.
Knuckle massage used for deep Hamstring massage, this can also be used (like the elbow) on large and deep muscles, e.g quads, calves, hamstrings, gluteus, lats, etc
Sports Massage - Focussed and specific. Often with an element of discomfort to enhance the healing process. This is a shoulder blade technique aimed at muscles inserting onto the medial border and muscles with origins on the anteriomedial aspect of the scapula.
